Crazy for Coconut

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 1.42.58 PM

As the colder months approach you have probably noticed that your skin, nails and hair have started to get dry and brittle. This dryness leads to breakage for the hair, peeling for the skin and cracking for the nails, not fun! It’s not as though we don’t have enough to worry about with the chilly Canadian temperatures, worrying about complicated beauty routines is the last thing we want to add to the list.

What if I told you there was one simple fruit that could fix all of these problems? And what if I told you that we have used it as a key ingredient in the majority of our WAXON products? The answer is COCONUT.

Eating raw coconut has many health benefits but the main benefit for winter is that it boosts your immune system, making you less susceptible to cold and flu. Specific fats found in Coconut including caprylic, capric and lauric fatty acids–are antibacterial, antiviral and antiprotozoal, helping to boost your immune system and destroy pathogens.

As well as boosting your immunity there are a ton of vitamins and minerals found in Coconuts. Just one cup of shredded coconut contains 60 percent of your recommended daily intake of manganese, 17 percent for copper, 11 percent for selenium, 11 percent for potassium, 10 percent for iron, 9 percent for phosphorus, 6 percent for magnesium and 5 percent for zinc.

That’s one powerful fruit! Not to mention its delicious, sprinkle shredded coconut onto your muesli, drink fresh coconut water or eat the raw flesh straight from the coconut as a great snack.

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 2.36.27 PM

Applying coconut oil to hair helps smooth over the hairs cuticles, which can become damaged because of the cold weather. The coconut seeps into the hair restoring its shimmer and shine and getting rid of those crunchy feeling ends.

We recommend using WAXON BodyShot Skin Quenching Body Oil on towel-dried hair. A pea-sized amount worked through the hair is enough to have it feeling and looking great after styling.

BodyShot has all natural ingredients so its not going to coat your hair in any chemical junk AND a slight hint of Blood Orange and White Grapefruit Oil that is uplifting and has a delicious smell!

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 2.42.52 PM

Applying coconut oil to freshly cleansed and exfoliated skin at night will help to soothe extremely dry skin. You can use it on your face and your entire body; it seeps right into the skin and locks in moisture. In the morning you will wake up with soft supple skin and it was all achieved while you were sleeping!

We recommend Exfoliating with WAXON On The Rocks. It straight up exfoliates and cleanses skin in one simple step, using all natural exfoliants, such as sugar and white lava, to smooth skin. The sulfate-free formula is a 2-in-1 exfoliant wash with a coconut oil base to heal, hydrate, and treat anti-inflammatory issues as well as soften and exfoliate your skin. Gentle enough for daily use.

After exfoliating apply BodyShot or raw Coconut all over!

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 2.42.29 PM

Your nails are made up of Keratin, which is the protein in your hair so it makes sense that while your hair suffers in the colder months as does your nails. The cuticles in particular take a beating and split cuticles can be super painful.

We recommend applying a dab of BodyShot skin quenching body oil directly to your cuticles and then massaging it in, work up from the cuticle to the nail. This will keep your cuticles soft, which will prevent them from splitting; it will also stop your nails from cracking.

While your giving your nails some TLC, massage your fingers and hands, if you find BodyShot is a little heavy for you use our WAXON Body Cocktail hydrating lotion. It seeps right into the skin and doesn’t leave a sticky film on your skin like a lot of hand lotions on the market do, and of course it contains Coconut oil!

Halloween Girl Power!

That time of year has rolled around again, the time for grown adults to get dressed up as whatever they want and go out in public without anyone batting an eyelid! We love Halloween! Who doesn’t?! The only downside is thinking of a new costume year after year. You want to look fierce of course but you don’t want to blow the budget on an outfit that, lets face it; you’re probably never going to wear again.

Sick of dressing up as a sexy cat, a sexy nurse, a sexy maid or a sexy pumpkin? Us too! So here’s our Halloween list of costumes that are quick and easy but most importantly pack a feminine punch!

Best Solo Costume Ideas

Rosie The Riveter

She was the original career woman and nobody pulls of red lipstick like Rosie. She showed us that even though you can be a hands on hard working woman you could still look fierce doing it! Everything about this costume from the headscarf to the stunning 1950’s make-up make it a winning choice this Halloween.

rosie the riveter

Oh Queen Bee what did we every do without you? Everything about Beyoncé screams girl power and as soon as you put that costume on you are not only going to look like the baddest chick in the room you are going to feel like it. Beyoncé is a fashion chameleon who’s had a tonne of iconic looks over the years so have fun with this one!

Screen Shot 2015-10-15 at 2.44.11 PM

Frida Kahlo

She was the original feminist and nobody is quite as iconic as Frida. She was a game changer way back when with her iconic art and feminist views and paved the way for us all today. Her iconic look makes her a definite favourite for costume choices this Halloween, all you need is some flowers for your hair, a colourful shawl and a DIY uno-brow and your all set.

Hilary Clinton

We have a feeling this one is going to be a favourite this year. Hilary is no doubt the most popular female icon of 2015 and so she should be since she’s going to be the first female President. All you need for this costume is a kickass pant suit, a killer blow out and some extreme hold hairspray.

Best BFF Costume Ideas

Thelma and Louise

What is better than a totally kick ass costume that makes you look hot but also screams girl power? A totally kick as costume you can coordinate with your bestie! Thelma and Louise were the original #girlsqaud (does two count as a squad?) long before Taylor Swift came along. Not to mention it can be easily thrown together last minute with things you already have at home.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey

These hilarious ladies have had some iconic moments over the years from their outrageous SNL characters to even just their personal style, it’s an easy costume to pull together. They’ve both written best selling books AND have been key contributors in the rising feminist movement of 2015 so we think this one will be a favourite this year.

Best Girl Squad Costume Ideas

Cast of Girls

We all identify of one of the characters from this iconic show and its always fun to get a group of gals together for a Halloween costume. There is so much to choose from Shoshanna’s donut inspired hair buns, Jessa’s boho chic style, Marnie’s uptight sweater vest combos to Hannah’s quirky playsuits.

Bad Blood Music Video

The music video that caused a stir this year for all the right reasons! It teamed together kick ass outfits, women of all shapes and sizes and a badass soundtrack. Strobing is the New Contouring

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past month you would know that strobing has taken over the contouring craze. We’ve broken down this popular beauty technique into an easy to follow guide to have you looking fab this fall.

So What is strobing exactly? To put it simply, strobing highlights your facial features where as contouring is all about shading. Celebs like ‘Demi Lavato’ and ‘Chrissy Teigan’ have embraced the new technique to give skin a healthy looking glow and youthful appearance.

Why has it become more popular then contouring? It’s a lot easier to achieve and has increased in popularity over contouring because its more natural looking and works well on all skin types.

Screen Shot 2015-10-06 at 2.47.22 PM Screen Shot 2015-10-06 at 2.48.25 PM

Ok so now that we have you convinced that strobing is the way of tomorrow and contouring is so 2015, heres an easy step guide on how you can achieve it at home.

Step 1. Mix a highlighting cream with your liquid foundation, our favourite is ‘M.A.C – Strobe Cream’. You will only need a pea size amount. This will give your skin that beautiful “glow” which is hard to come by in the colder months!

Screen Shot 2015-10-06 at 2.55.57 PM

Step 2. Once you have applied your foundation, take a highlighter and dab small amounts onto your cheekbones, bridge of your nose and cupids bow. We recommended using Benefit High Beam face highlighter.

Screen Shot 2015-10-06 at 2.13.43 PM

Step 3. Set it all with a highlighting powder such as ‘Too Faced – Candlelight Highlighting Powder Duo’ and voila strobing complete!

Screen Shot 2015-10-06 at 2.24.12 PM

Step 4. Apply lashes and lips to complete the look, we recommend a strong fall lip colour like ‘Sephora – Rouge Infusion in Fig Ink’. Exaggerate your lashes by using a volume enhancing mascara like ‘Dior – Diorshow Mascara’ to make your features pop.

Sorry contouring, you’re dumped.

Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice!

Screen Shot 2015-09-28 at 9.26.21 PM

The leaves are changing colour, the temperature has dropped enough for us to wear boots and there is pumpkin flavored everything everywhere. That’s right, every girls favourite season is finally upon us, its fall baby!

We scoped out Fall fashion week 2015 and kept a close eye on our favourite celebs to find out what the hot beauty trends are for fall, here are our favourites.

Berry Lips

Lipstick season is back with a vengeance! Deep rich berry tones ranging from cherry reds to plums are hot for fall and winter. Darker shades are ideal for the colder weather because there is less chance for smearing.

If your hesitant to try darker lip shades ease your way into it with a sheer gloss and in no time you’ll be confident enough to rock a bold matte lip.

WAXON Fav: Try Kat Von D ‘Everlasting Liquid Lipstick’ to avoid losing your lipstick all over your pumpkin spiced latte.

WAXON Tip: It’s key to use a lip liner before applying your lipstick to avoid blurred edges which is much more noticeable with darker shades.

Screen Shot 2015-09-28 at 8.04.08 PM

Glitter Eyes

Glitter eye make-up was a popular choice at Fall fashion Week 2015 and it’s a cute way to add some va va voom to your night time make-up look. Even though it looks amazing it is a quick and easy application over your daytime eye make-up making it the ideal choice for after work cocktails.

WAXON Fav: Napoleon Perdis ‘Cake Eyeliner Sealer’ teamed with Napoleon Perdis ‘Loose Eye Glitter’.

WAXON Tip: Gently pat and press on your glitter eye-makeup. Don’t apply it in strokes like you would with normal eye shadow. Wait for one layer to dry and then add more until you get your desired result.

Brushstroke Nails

One of the hottest looks on the runway for Fall was brushstroke nails and yep you guessed it nail polish that looks like brush strokes. What’s great about this new trend is that its super easy to do at home and it can be as bold or neutral as you dare. Experiment with bright colours to build your own mini masterpiece!

WAXON Fav: CND ‘Lobster Roll’ and CND ‘Cerulean Sea’ brush stroked over a crisp white polish.

WAXON Tip: Do you have a bunch of almost empty bottles of nail polish lying around? Perfect! Less polish on your brush is better to get the ideal brushstroke look.

Screen Shot 2015-09-28 at 9.06.11 PM

Glitter Nails

Glitter nail polish isn’t just for sixth grade sleepovers it’s now a popular choice for Fall. Keep it sophisticated by using darker colours like deep reds or ambers, which are a Fall staple year after year. Getting a professional shellac manicure is the ideal choice to avoid glitter flaking off and looking like the glitter fairy has followed you around your home, office and gym.

WAXON Fav: MAC ‘Cocktail Hour’ is the perfect fall shade that’s matches practically everything.

WAXON Tip: If your not too sure about this whole glitter trend, instead of painting all of your nails in glitter just have one statement nail and keep the rest a neutral colour.

Sleek Ponytails

A sleek pony is easy to achieve and works well with statement makeup like berry lips or glitter eyes. Whether it’s a low pony with a middle part or a high pony it suits any face shape. Not to mention if you get caught in the rain your hair isn’t completely ruined making it a popular choice for fall.

WAXON Fav: Living Proof ‘Satin Hair Serum’ use on wet hair before blow drying and straightening, it has a built in heat protectant but will also leave your hair looking shiny and silky smooth.

WAXON Tip: Wear a sleek pony for day three hair, your hairs natural oils will help give it that shine without using any product and nobody will know you’ve been too busy binge watching Grey’s Anatomy to wash your hair!

Screen Shot 2015-09-28 at 9.15.41 PM

Hair Accessories

Goodbye Summer, farewell flower crowns. The good news is statement hair accessories are still in! Leather and velveteen hair bands are a popular choice for Fall, which are perfectly teamed with a sleek pony.

Tortoise shell hair clips and combs are also making a strong comeback, raid your Mum’s wardrobe or check out some flea markets for some great vintage pieces.

WAXON Fav: Forver 21 ‘Velveteen Braid’ headband. Available in black or red which both work perfectly for Fall.

WAXON Tip: Help hair combs stay put by using dry shampoo at the root of where you are going to place the hair comb, secure with a little hair spray and you should have the perfect do all day!

Hair: Part hair in the middle and create loose curls using a large barrel tong. Brush out curls and spritz with a light hair mist to give it some hold without compromising its natural movement.
Make-Up: Blue eyeliner is a bold choice but it works well with this look because the rest of Emily’s makeup is minimal and her hair is simple. Achieve this look with a liquid gel liner that wont smudge like Yves Saint Laurents long wear cream eyeliner in Sea Black.

Makeup Meltdown

We love Summer but it’s been super hot in the last few days and being packed on a streetcar without Air Conditioning on the morning commute can have disastrous results on our Make-up. We all want to feel our glamorous selves during the heat wave so we have scoured the internet for some tips and tricks to prevent Make-up melting off during hot weather.

Tip #1 – Avoid the Heavy Stuff

Stay away from any heavy oil based foundation, it is more likely to smear during hot weather. Stick to light, shear foundation – like BB cream.

WAXON Fav Pick:

Tip #2 – Ice Ice Baby

This sounds like an odd one but it works! Rubbing an ice-cube over your face before applying make-up offers a cooling effect. Cooling down the skin helps to close up any open pores – eliminating both blackheads, and the need to cake on too much foundation.

Tip #3 – Staying Power

Using waterproof mascara isn’t just for watery eyes – it’s also perfect during the hotter months! The waterproof stuff helps us avoid panda eyes caused by sweat and sebum build up under the eyes and on the eyelids.

Also using finishing powder over your liquid make-up will ensure it wont budge even under the toughest conditions. Use a mineral based powder to avoid too much build up. Mineral powders are also great for days you don’t want to wear a full face of make-up but want that extra little something…nobody will even know you are wearing it! And even better – it contains SPF 27 to protect your skin while looking great!

WAXON Fav Pick:

Tip # 4 –  Always be prepared

Correctly preparing your skin before applying make-up is going to improve staying power – while also preventing those blemishes that seem to pop up around this time of year. Use a non-oil based cleanser followed by a toner and primer. Once you’ve done the prep your foundation will go on like a dream and won’t budge!

Tip # 5  – Oil be Gone

Vanquish the greasy face look by using oil-blotting sheets during the day. This genius invention is super handy and compact so you can keep them in your purse, the car and the office. All you have to do is blot the thin paper sheets over any problem areas (mainly the t-zone) and voila! All of the oil is transferred onto the paper and off your skin.

WAXON Fav Pick:

Tip # 6 – The Perfect Pout

Instead of using a heavy lipstick that is going to dry out your lips or smudge easily at the first sign of upper lip sweat (not glamorous) – opt for a lip stain. Lip stains range from sheer to matte so you can go for a natural look or a bold lip. They also often contain Vitamin-E as a main ingredient – helping your lips look gorgeous and supple.

If all else fails, go make-up free! You look gorgeous the way you are, and summer is best spent enjoying the outdoors rather then hiding inside worrying that our make-up is going to smudge! Just remember – ALWAYS wear sunscreen!

Sweat is Just Fat Crying

Is there a way to make workouts fun while still being effective? A lot of new workout studios have popped up in Toronto that offer just that! To prove if it was just a FAD or the answer to our prayers we sent one of our WAXON staff off to a few workout classes that had a unique twist to see what all the fuss was about – here’s how it went!

Barre has become increasingly popular over the last year. I’m sure you all know someone who has either tried it once or who is obsessed. So what is barre? Well, in a nutshell barre is a combination of ballet, yoga and pilates. The barre is used as a prop to balance while doing exercises that focus on strength training. You focus on holding your body still while contracting a certain set of muscles in high intervals.

Where? Barreworks

My Experience

I walked in to my first barre class feeling pretty intimidated… I’m in no way super fit, but I do really enjoy yoga and I have friends who rave about barre so I have wanted to give it a try for a long time. As a beginner, I probably didn’t have all of the postures down to a tee (I’m sure there were times I wasn’t even close!) but the teacher was really helpful! She gave us variations on postures so that those of us (probably just me) who weren’t as flexible could still get a benefit out of the poses.

It was really hard -definitely a lot harder than I thought it would be! But, I felt great after walking out of the Barreworks studio! tThe next day I could feel every muscle in my body and I moaned and groaned a lot – but that’s a sure sign that it was a good workout. I’m glad I finally gave it a try and with regular classes I can definitely see how it would be a great full body workout, perfect for summer.

Difficulty 5 stars

Single Class – $21
5 Class – $95
10 Class – $170

I have a friend back home who swears by hooping. I never gave it much thought until I noticed it becoming increasingly popular – and I was getting bored with my usual workouts. It sounded fun, which is the perfect workout for me so I decided to give it a try. For those of you not familiar with hooping, its a fusion of dance and aerobics incorporating a hula hoop. It helps to improve balance while toning and sculpting your whole body.

My Experience

I LOVED it! The staff were all super bubbly and friendly and everyone else in the class was there to have fun while working up a sweat. I probably wasn’t the best at it being my first time but I didn’t feel intimidated at all because I was having so much fun. There was a lot of sweat and I was exhausted after it so it was definitely a good workout! I would recommend bringing a friend or a group of friends for some added laughs.

Indoor Surfing

This workout craze started about two years ago. Many people thought it was a fad but it’s proved to be a great full body workout while keeping things interesting. There are a variety of classes you can choose from, which incorporate dance, yoga, aerobics and weight training all while using an indoor surfboard. The surfboard is attached to hydraulics so it moves from side to side and back to front with your body, pushing you to engage your core and stabilizer muscles.

My Experience

I have terrible balance and coordination but as I mentioned I love yoga so I didn’t think it would be too difficult. I was wrong! It’s one thing to have good balance on the ground, but trying to balance on a surfboard that moves with your body while doing poses is pretty difficult. I did have a lot of fun though and if you are prepared to laugh at yourself for the first few times it would be a great workout for your whole body once you’ve mastered it. The instructors were really great and gave you tips and tricks to keep yourself distracted so that you stayed balanced. This is another workout that would be really fun to do with a bunch of friends!
